Sound and Light Shows
Though not included in the majority of tour company package tours, the evening sound and light shows at five of Egypt’s major sites (Abu Simbel, Edfu, Giza, Karnak, and Philae) are something that should not be missed. Each one is unique, focussing on the history of its locale, using the particular site as a backdrop for the colours within the light show, and a superb narration for the sound (with headphones being supplied for translations into other languages than English).
Being an evening event it is something that the visitor should ask their tour company’s representative or guide to arrange, though it is possible to just turn up at the allocated time, pay the admission fee, and then watch and enjoy. All of the shows are operated by the same company, the Misr (Egypt) Sound, Light and Cinema Company, and their website (http://www.soundandlight.com.eg/) will give you all the information you need to visit the various locations, including their timetables, as well as short videos to give you a brief impression of what they look and sound like.
Abu Simbel Show:
Set next to the shores of Lake Nasser, straight in front of the magnificent Temples of Abu Simbel, this sound and light show will take you back to the time of Ramses II, and his wife Nefertari.
Please note that because of transportation problems, you do need to stay overnight in an Abu Simbel hotel, or be on board a Lake Nasser cruise, to watch this show.
Sound and lights are well used here to illustrate the history of Edfu and its temple, as well as conveying the different folkloric rituals and celebrations of the area.
The Sphinx takes you back to the time of the Pharaohs, narrating whilst the pyramids are individually lit up. Egypt’s ancient secrets are revealed during this one hour spectacular.
The history of Karnak and Thebes (Waset), including the achievements of some of the Pharaohs, are told in this awe inspiring mixture of narration and visual effects.
Ancient gods and goddesses are brought back to life with music, lights, and narration. Learn all about the myth of Isis, Osiris and Seth whilst the temples are brought alive.
