Detailed Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrive Cairo

Ahlan wasahlan bekom fi Masr: Arde El Farahnah (Welcome to Egypt: the Land of the Pharaohs). Once you have arrived at the Arrivals Hall, after your short bus trip from your aeroplane, you will be welcomed by our Oriental Tours representative, who will be standing inside the doors holding a board showing your name. He will then help you purchase your visa (if applicable), get your currency exchanged to Egyptian Pounds (known as LE, which is short for Livre Égyptienne), and then take you through Passport Control. From here he will assist you with collecting your luggage, before escorting you to our waiting, air-conditioned, vehicle outside. You will then be taken to your hotel, with our representative explaining details of your package to you, en route, as well as answering any questions you may have. Upon arrival at your hotel he will assist you with check in, continue answering any questions from you.

The rest of the day is free time for you, allowing you to relax and freshen-up after your flight, but should you wish an optional extra, such as a trip to the Giza Pyramids Sound and Light show or a River Nile dinner cruise, please feel free to ask our representative to arrange this for you.

Overnight in your hotel in Cairo (X)

  2. Day 2: Cairo

Once you have had your breakfast your guide will meet you and take you on a full day tour of Cairo. First of all you will be taken to Giza to see the world famous pyramids and sphinx. You will gaze in awe at the magnificent Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops): the last of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World, the pyramids of Khafre (Chephren), and Menkaure (Mycerinos), and then gaze in delight at the spectacle of the supreme Sphinx.

A quick break for lunch (optional) and you will then be taken to the Egyptian Museum (or as it is officially known: The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities!). Marvel at the thousands of artefacts from Egypt’s almost eternal history, 160,000 items spread out over 107 rooms, and then be prepared for your face to face encounter with the golden Death Mask of Tutankhamun.

From here you will be taken to the Citadel of Saladin, built on Cairo’s highest point: Mokattam Hill. Saladin erected the Citadel to protect Cairo, from the crusaders, between 1176 and 1183 CE and nowadays it houses 3 mosques (the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the Al-Nasir Muhammad Qala'un Mosque, and the Mosque of Suleyman Pasha), 4 museums (Al-Gawhara Palace Museum, the Carriage Museum, the Egyptian Military Museum, and the Egyptian Police Museum), fortifications, walkways and a cafeteria.

Finally you will be taken to the Khan El Khalili, the famous street bazaar where you can buy almost any type of souvenir you want, as well as being able to sit and drink tea, coffee, soft drinks or Turkish coffee, and even smoke a shisha (if you wish). You will also find restaurants that serve superb meals here.

At the end of this interesting day you will be driven back to your Cairo hotel. (B)

    Optional extras:
    During the tour:
Entrance to the Great Pyramid of Khufu
Entrance to the Pyramid of Khafre or Menkaure (only one is open at any given time)

  3. Day 3: Cairo/Alexandria/Cairo

    The Roman Amphitheatre
    The Royal Jewellery Museum
The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa
The Greco-Roman Museum (when it reopens in 2015)

Please note that your guide will advise you of the best order in which to make these visits as well as if you may have to change one due to time constraints and/or travelling distances within Alexandria

You will stop for lunch (optional) when the opportunity arises, but sometime around 1200/1300. Once the tour is over you will be driven back to your Cairo hotel. (B)

  4. Day 4: Cairo/Abu Simbel/Aswan

Once you have had your breakfast our representative will meet you and transfer you to Cairo International Airport for your flight to Aswan. Upon arrival our representative there will meet you and escort you, in our air-conditioned vehicle, to the site of Abu Simbel. Situated approximately 285 kilometres south of Aswan, including crossing the Tropic of Cancer, these two world famous temples are absolutely amazing. Built by Ramses II in honour of himself (the ultimate egotist?) and his favourite wife, Nefertari, these rock cut temples were moved, in 1968, to escape the encroaching waters of the newly formed Lake Nasser. After your visit here you will be driven back to Aswan (the whole trip will take around 8-9 hours) and to a Nubian house. The remainder of the day will be free to do as you wish: relax, or take one of our optional extras. Overnight at the Nubian house.  (B)

    Optional extras:
Philae Temples Sound and Light Show
    Nubian Museum
Tombs of the Nobles (West Bank)
Aga Khan Mausoleum (external view only)
    Elephantine Island
    Kitchener’s Island (Botanical Gardens)
    Felucca trip

  5. Day 5: Nile Cruise: Aswan

Once you have had your breakfast our representative will meet you and assist you in your transfer to your River Nile cruise boat, your home for the next 4 days, helping you with embarkation procedures. Once you are settled in, your guide will meet you and take you, in our air-conditioned vehicle, to visit the Aswan High Dam and then a short motor boat ride to see the tremendous Temples of Philae. You will then be taken back to your boat for your dinner. Overnight docked in Aswan. (B, L, D)

    Optional extras:
Philae Temples Sound and Light Show
    Nubian Museum
Tombs of the Nobles (West Bank)
Aga Khan Mausoleum (external view only)
    Kitchener’s Island (Botanical Gardens)

  6. Day 6: Nile Cruise: Aswan/Esna

As you are having your breakfast the boat will start to set sail for Kom Ombo. Upon arrival your guide will take you to see the unique double Temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to Sobek and Horus. After this you will return to the boat, for lunch, whilst gently sailing to Edfu. Upon arrival you will visit the Temple Of Horus, with fantastic photo opportunities with the huge statues of the falcon god. After a short trip on a horse drawn carriage you will return to your boat and watch as it departs Edfu en route for Esna, where it will negotiate the lock, rising 6 meters before it can continue its journey. Dinner and overnight docked at Esna. (B, L, D)

  7. Day 7: Nile Cruise: Esna/Luxor

Before breakfast the boat will set sail for Luxor as you have an early start today. Upon docking your guide will take you, in our air-conditioned vehicle. To see Luxor’s West Bank; the ancient Theban necropolis. Here you will get to visit the Valley of the Kings, where you can explore 3 tombs (the Tomb of Tutankhamen is an extra cost); the magnificent Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir El Bahri; the workers village at Deir El Medina; and finally, the remains of the Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III: the Colossi of Memnon. Back to the boat for your lunch and then you will be taken to visit Luxor’s famous two temples: Karnak (the world’s largest religious site) and Luxor. Marvel at the immense columns in Karnak Temple’s Hypostyle Hall, as well as getting to see various obelisks, statues, more columns, and various artefacts that were primarily dedicated to the god Amun, his wife Mut, and their son Khonsu. Next you will visit the smaller, in size but not in spectacle, Luxor Temple. Mainly added to by Ramses II it is now missing one of its obelisks, which can be seen in the Place de la Concorde in Paris: swapped for a clock (in the Mohammed Ali Mosque at Saladin’s Citadel) which has never worked. This temple also boasts many columns, statues and various artefacts.

After these visits you will be taken back to your boat for your dinner and a well-earned relaxation session. Dinner and overnight docked in Luxor. (B, L, D)

  8. Day 8: Nile Cruise: Disembarkation/Cairo

Once you have had your breakfast our representative will meet you and transfer you to Luxor Airport, in our air-conditioned vehicle. Here you will get your flight back to Cairo, where our representative will meet you, help you with your luggage, and transfer you to your Cairo hotel. Once completed, the rest of the day is free for you to relax, explore, or take one of our optional extras. (B)

Giza Pyramids Sound and Light Show
    River Nile dinner cruise
    Cairo Tower visit and dinner
    Pharaonic Village
Dinner show including belly dancers and/or whirling dervishes

  9. Day 9: Final Departure

Bon voyage, and thank you for travelling with Oriental Tours Egypt. (B)
