Dedicated to the god Horus, it was built between 237BCE and 57BCE, during the Greek (Ptolemaic) Period; it actually sits on the remains of previous temples that had been built here. The reliefs on the walls tell the story of Horus taking out his revenge on Seth, for the murder of his father; Osiris, and give a fantastic insight into ancient Egyptian religion. An enormous 10 foot tall statue of Horus, the falcon god, stands at the entrance of the main temple building, and there are also a granite shrine to Nektanebo (360-342BCE) , the remains of a mamissi (birth-house), and the base of a pylon that once belonged to a Rameses II temple. The Temple of Horus is also the second largest temple in Egypt: Karnak being the largest! You will then visit the small bazaar in Edfu before heading back to the Dahabiya before it sails for Gebel El Silsila. Once believed, by the ancient Egyptians, to be where the Nile started, Gebel El Silsila is situated where the Nile narrows, as well as where the bedrock changes from limestone to sandstone. It was a very popular quarry, during the New Kingdom and Greco-Roman Periods, with stone being removed for the building of: Dendera, Edfu, Esna, Karnak, Kom Ombo, Western Thebes, and many more historic sites. Nowadays you can see a small Amenhotep III chapel as well as an unfinished sandstone sphinx. The Speos of Horemheb is directly across the river from Gebel El Silsila and is a rock-cut chapel with four pillars forming five openings. It was built by the Pharaoh Horemheb and the sanctuary commemorates him with the god Atum. Ramses II completed the Speos and later pharaohs, such as Ramses III, Ramses IV, and Shoshenq I are commemorated on a stele offering to the gods of Thebes, Heliopolis and Memphis, which can be found to the south of the Speos. It is at this fantastic location that you will have your dinner tonight, enjoying the marvelous atmosphere. Overnight on board in Gebel El Silsila. (B, L, D)

The Temple of Kom Ombo is very unusual as it is dedicated to two gods: Sobek and Haroeris (the Greek name for the Egyptian god 'Herwer', which translates into 'Great Horus' or 'Horus the Elder'). It is built symmetrically, with two entrances, two sanctuaries, and a clear division that separates the temple into one half Sobek and one half Haroeris. It is a Ptolemaic temple, built between the reigns of Ptolemy VI (Philometor) and Ptolemy XII (Neos Dionysos) with sandstone from the nearby Gebel El Silsila quarries. The forecourt and outer corridor were added during the Roman Period. After this amazing visit you will head back to the Dahabiya as it sails to Aswan to start the third part of your Honeymoon Tour package in Egypt. Overnight on board in Aswan. (B, L, D)
